heart rate control on a treadmillIn the beginning of treadmill history, there was no such thing as a treadmill with a heart rate monitor or a heart rate control.  Monitoring one’s heart rate during exercise meant constantly checking the pulse rate the old fashioned way…which was inconvenient and time-consuming.  Often, the heart rate simply went unmonitored. 

Around the mid-90s, heart rate control and heart rate monitors on fitness equipment rose in popularity.  Today, these are standard on the majority of treadmills, elliptical trainers, and stationary bikes.

Heart Rate Control versus Heart Rate Monitor

A heart rate monitor on a treadmill does just what its name implies.  It monitors your heart rate.  By holding onto the built-in sensors in the handlebars, the heart rate monitor takes a reading.  Based on the reading, you can decide whether you need to crank up your workout or if you need to slow down a bit to stay within your targeted range.

A heart rate control system, on the other hand, does more than merely monitor your heart rate.  A heart rate control automatically adjusts the intensity of your workouts based on the targeted heart rate that you specify.   

A heart rate control is definitely more beneficial than a heart rate monitor alone.  It certainly makes it easier to get the most out of your workouts.  After all, you don’t have to depend upon your own judgment as to whether you’re exercising at the right intensity level to reach your desired heart rate.  To help you reach and maintain your specified heart rate, the heart rate control will monitor your heart rate for you and increase the speed and incline as needed.

The wireless heart rate control is the most favorable type of heart rate control system.  After attaching a wireless strap to your chest, your heart rate is fed into the console, which then controls the intensity of your workout.  The handgrip heart rate control requires you to hold onto the handle grip while you walk or run.  This can be awkward and inconvenient.  The wireless heart rate control just makes more sense and is much easier to use.

Why a Heart Rate Control on Your Treadmill is Beneficial

When exercising, your maximum and training heart rates will be affected by various factors.  One of the most important factors is the type of exercise in which you engage.  The more muscle mass used, the higher the training heart rate that will be reached.

Other factors, such as fatigue or medications, may cause changes in your heart rate while working out.  Because your heart rate may be affected by a number of variables, you cannot be sure that the same exercise routine you did yesterday will produce the same heart rate today. 

That’s where the heart rate control system comes in handy.  A heart rate control is a wonderful tool for managing your heart rate during exercise sessions.  It will keep you within the designated target range to ensure that you always get an optimal workout…time after time.

Most likely, you aren’t going to do the same identical workout everyday.  One day, you may want to walk at a brisk pace on your treadmill.  The next, you may choose to do some interval training.  In fact, it is recommended by fitness specialists to exercise in a variety of heart training zones after determining your maximum heart rate.  By doing so, you can greatly improve your fitness…including your cardiovascular fitness.

When you allow the heart rate control on your treadmill to control the intensity levels of your workouts, you don’t have to worry that you’re not working hard enough or that you’re working too hard.  All you have to do is focus on the exercise.  The heart rate control will do the rest.
