What You Should Know About Interval Training

Interval training is a great way to get in shape and stay in shape.  Nonetheless, there are a few things to remember before beginning such training.  For instance, if you haven’t exercised in a long time, you need to start out slowly and gradually work up to more intense workouts.  Be sure to warm up your body prior to picking up the pace during each exercise session.  Walking slowly and doing some light stretching can prepare your muscles for more intense activity.

Listen to your body!  If you’re having difficulty breathing or your muscles feel overly fatigued, slow down.  In time, your endurance and strength will improve, and you’ll be able to increase the intensity for longer periods of time.  To prevent muscle soreness and avoid injuries, always work at a pace that is suitable for your personal fitness level.

What Are The Benefits Of Interval Training?

Perhaps the biggest and most important benefit of interval training is the increased efficiency at which calories are burned and cardiovascular health is improved.  Even raising the intensity level of your workouts for a mere minute or so at a time produces results.  The longer you pick up the pace, the better the results will be!

Other benefits of interval training include:

  • Exercise variety alleviates boredom and promotes motivation.  The more motivated you are, the more likely you are to stick to your exercise program.
  • No special equipment or skills are required.  Interval training can be as simple as interjecting brief periods of light jogging into your usual brisk walk.
  • You can work out at your own fitness level and modify your workouts as fitness improves.
  • Because you do not have to maintain a high-intensity level for long periods of time in interval training, muscles are less likely to become overly sore.  As a result, exercise sessions are more pleasant and comfortable.

Interval Training On A Treadmill

Regular, routine treadmill workouts can become rather tedious over time.  However, there is a solution!  Make your treadmill workouts more interesting and challenging through interval training!

With a treadmill, you have the option of increasing the intensity of your exercise sessions by upping the speed or raising the incline.  Most treadmills have built-in programs that will automatically increase and decrease the speed and/or incline levels throughout the routine.  You can also manually adjust the intensity levels, if you prefer.

One of the best advantages of exercising on a treadmill is that you get to stay indoors in a comfortable, controlled environment and do not have to miss workouts due to extreme weather conditions.

Once you’ve reached your fitness goals, you can maintain your level of fitness or continue to challenge your body to reach new heights through interval training on your treadmill.

Note: Before beginning any exercise or diet program, consult your physician.
